Plant of the Month - Guzmania

Today is officially the first day of Spring! We're looking forward to bright blue skies, warm weather and the return of flowers from beneath the snow. To mark the occasion, we've picked one of our favourite flowering plants to be our plant of March. Say hello to the Guzmania.

Also known as 'tufted airplant', Guzmania is a flowering plant that is part of the Bromeliaceae family which boast over 120 individual species. The genus is named after the renowned Spanish pharmacist and naturalist, Anastasio Guzman. Fairly easy to care for, guz is a popular office and house plant and looks great placed on a desktop.

Once the plant has begun to produce white flowers during the summer it will die. However, new plants can be grown from the offsets which appear once the parent plant dies. A plant that loves humidity, guzmania needs to be keep in warm temperatures.
